Ballad of a WiFi Hero

This awesome animated video from Vulture and McSweeney’s is making the rounds on the web, based on Mike Lacher’s story, “In Which I Fix My Girlfriend’s Grandparents’ WiFi and Am Hailed As a Conquering Hero” which originally appeared in The Best of McSweeney’s Internet Tendency.

I am sure we all can relate in one way or another…

A Message from The False Advertising Industry

Only Organic, the people behind the USDA Certified Organic label, came out with a series of funny, but sad videos about the misleading tactics of the food industry and the usage of the term natural, which many people equate to organic. Sadly it is far from the truth, since products labeled as natural can include hormones, GMOs, and toxic pesticides.

Superbowl Round-Up

Last nights Super Bowl ads covered the gamut from plain to just plain strange. Most advertisers stayed within the safer realm of promoting their products, going for cute rather controversial, with some retro for good measures.

Here are some of the more notable ads from last night:

  • John Colbert turns into a (creepy) Pistachio
  • Ellen Degeneres dances happily ever after to Beats Music as Goldilocks with the Three Bears
  • Hyundai Genesis & Dads have a sixth sense
  • Gracie the little Cheerios girl is good at negotiations
  • RadioShack didn’t take itself too serious
  • Tim Tebow is happy without a contract and T-Mobile
  • Dannon Oikos Greek Yogurt was a bit tongue in cheek
  • Turbo Tax compared your taxes to the Super Bowl
  • Funny Doritos Time Machine

Watch them ALL here. Which one was your favorite?

Winter Warrior

Picking the right time to launch is a vital component to a successful campaign. A perfect example is the 2014 Nissan Rogue “Winter Warrior” commercial by TBWA, Canada, released January 10th, on the heels of the Polar Vortex, during which we experienced unusually low temperatures and large amounts of snow.

The commercial highlights the car’s ability to handle well in the snow, annihilating evil snow men and rescuing a stranded family who’s car does not start during the attack.

It’s always good to have a “hero” during winter time.

Will paper become obsolete in the digital age?

We grew up doing everything with pencil and paper. Once we were supported by a whole institution of print and publishing from newspaper to love letters. Now, most of these is vanishing, one after another.

Just about every aspect of a life can be accomplished with an electronic device, but even in the digital age there is still a need for paper – at some times more than others.

We would like to thank the Scott company for taking care of business since 1890.

“Merry Christmas to All and to All a Good Flight”

With the holiday season in full swing, there is one company that sure knows what it means to get in the holiday spirit. In a new viral video making the rounds on social media, Canadian airline WestJet treats unsuspecting passengers to a little holiday cheer.

While waiting to board their flights, travelers told a virtual Santa Claus what was on their Christmas wishlist. Once they were on their planes, WestJet employees went to work gathering presents. When the passengers reached their destination, they were greeted with more than just their luggage at baggage claim. One by one down the conveyor belt came individually wrapped presents for each traveler.

The events were caught on hidden camera and turned into a video with a “Night Before Christmas” narration.

You can watch the heartwarming video here:

Embracing Potty Humor

Too often I find myself waiting for the “Skip Ad” button to appear, while watching YouTube. Not so with “Girl’s Don’t Poo.” Not only did I watch the whole 2 minute infomercial, I watched it a second time.

Poo Pourri takes potty humor to a whole new level, by using a classy redhead with a british accent, to talk about your business like it’s nobodies business. While brands traditionally shy away from this risqué type of advertisements, Poo Pourri is embracing it and successfully so. After just a little over a month the video had over 16 million views on YouTube and sold over 4 million bottles in just one year.

Carving out a Nitch

Halloween is a frighteningly successful holiday – second only to Christmas in consumer spending. Americans spend in excess of $7 billion each year to celebrate this spirited day.

Halloween has undergone a social change from traditional family trick-or-treating to a full blown event for adults, nearly 70 percent of adults plan to celebrate Halloween. It’s a time where marketers are truly expected to go outside the box with something surprising and different. When a brand introduces a playful spooky marketing campaign of their product or service, it can be a real treat for retailers.

In the spirit of things, we thought it would be nice to resurrect this Dirt Devil commercial from 2011 with over 3.3 million views – one of our all-time favorites:

And check out the ads below from across the interweb for some eye candy (pun intended):

Go Big or Go Home

In a world where technology rules and we are greeted by ads on every device, it can sometimes be hard for advertisers to cut through the clutter. However, if you have the budget (or sometimes a lack of budget), guerrilla marketing may just be the way to go. What exactly is guerrilla marketing? It’s a way of using non-mainstream media and tactics to create buzz about a product or service one has to offer. Below are just a few examples of some recent campaigns that have popped up around the world.

LARGER THAN LIFE MODELS
If you are looking to promote a new TV channel or the arrival of a popular TV series in Britain, it appears that giant sculptures strategically placed around the country are the way to go. A 12-foot-tall version of Colin Firth’s character Mr. Darcy from the popular mini-series Pride and Prejudice has been seen in several British lakes to promote UKTV’s new Drama channel. Its most recent stop was in Lyme Park in Cheshire where the famous scene was filmed. In a similar fashion, movie and TV streaming site BlinkBox promoted the arrival of the newest season of Game of Thrones by placing a 40-foot-long dragon skull on a beach in Dorset – an area famous for dinosaur fossils.

INTERACTIVE
Earlier this summer, popular beer brand Heineken tempted travelers at New York’s JFK airport with a game of “Departure Roulette.” They set up a large board and asked people to change their destination with the push of the button. As one would imagine, most were not adventurous enough to “Drop Everything. Push Button. Commit To (New Location)” as the sign prompted. But there were a few that were up to the challenge. The event was set up to tie in to a Heineken campaign in Amsterdam in which four participants were dropped in exotic locations and asked to film their journeys.

FLASH MOBS
Flash mob videos have been making the rounds online for the past few years. These choreographed groups generally take the public by surprise as they show up in crowded shopping malls or subway cars. The Rijksmuseum Museum in Amsterdam used this approach to draw attention to the fact that it was reopening after 10 years of undergoing extensive restorations. Descending on unsuspecting shoppers at a mall in Breda, this flash mob consisted of over two dozen members of Rembrandt’s ‘The Night Watch’ – reconstructing the museum’s most famous painting and inviting the public to the reopening to come see the real thing.

Have you seen an example of a great guerrilla marketing campaign? Tell us about it in the comments below and be sure to check out this list of “122 Must See Guerilla Marketing Examples” from CreativeGuerrillaMarketing.com.
